Book of 2024 update, plus new pens!

Hello dear readers, I realised that I hadn’t updated you all on The Book of 2024 in a little while so it was time! I have also added (or re-added) some pens to my drawing arsenal which I will tell you about.

Live, live, live!

I’ve been trying hard to be more regular and consistent with my Twitch streams this year. I’ve been working on some different projects and doing a variety of stuff on stream and I’m at a point where I’m really feeling happy doing that again. I hope anyone who tunes in enjoys the content. I have also started doing a little simul-cast to TikTok live, which I’ll keep experimenting with.

Other projects you say? Well yes! Look out for posts about my other projects on here over the coming weeks. You may have already seen some pictures of puppets I made recently of the great Sea of Thieves streamers, BoxyFresh, LDSylvr and Beardagdeddon. These have been a lot of fun! Puppet LD and Boxy have already made their way into the latest Tales from the Got Damn episode!

Other things I’ve been doing have been making some hats and very soon some tattooing equipment will arrive so I can start looking at whether or not my artwork and art style would translate into the medium of tattoos.

Care for Some Drawings?

A Closer Look

I really like the flowers I’ve been drawing lately and getting more involved and varied with my leaf styles. Everything I’ve done lately I’ve been pretty happy with.

There’s one drawing there that I’m really happy with. It turned out great and is , if you ask me, one of the best things I’ve drawn in a little while. I thought I’d give a bit of a closer look at it here and let you know what I like about it.

The Drawing in Question.

There’s a couple of things I really like about this drawing. Firstly, I used some different and more varied leaf shapes in this one. A few days after drawing this I actually did a leaf study which was a lot of fun. But it’s the large slash of negative space down the right side of the image that I love the most here. Negative space in images can be a very powerful took to use and create amazing illusions and tricks of the eye in pieces.

This particular negative space inclusion was essentially an accident. I had drawn the plants around the top of the eye and had that one space between the leaves and the little daisy type flowers and had no idea what to draw there. So I just left it blank, and let that space bleed down into the eyeball. I think it was super effective and turned out great!

A New Pen Enters the Chat…

I’ve talked at length about the main pens I use in my art, the Tombow Fudenosuke brush pens. There is another tool that I enjoy using which I’ve recently brought back into rotation though. The Staedtler Pigment Liner.

My history with this pen is a pretty simple one. I read once that Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy and my personal all time favourite artist) uses them. And I figure if they’re good enough for the master, they’re good enough for me!

Staedtler Pigment Liners

They’re a felt tip style fine liner that goes all the way down to .05 in size. I generally use .1 and .05 for really find crosshatching and texturing details where the brush pens are just too chonky to get the fineness of line that I’d like.

Here are some Amazon affiliate links where you can pick up some Pigment Liners, I’ll also add the links to the brush pens I use at the bottom of this page. Click here for the full list of pens.

  • Love the new flower series! Agree that the eyeball with negative space is super cool. It adds to the movement of the image. It appears to be falling through space and the extra bit of white makes it look like the daisy chunk is tearing off at breakneck speed! Something fun to explore further!
